MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre
Opened in 1967 and named after its creator, Ottawa educator W.T. MacSkimming, the MacSkimming Outdoor Education Centre is one of North America’s first Outdoor Education facilities. Unique to MacSkimming is the Pioneer Village – a group of 1880’s log-and-mortar buildings, relocated to MacSkimming from multiple heritage sites in the region, that makes Canadian history education come alive. Also at MacSkimming’s 160-hectare Ottawa River site are three excellent examples of ecosystems ideal for environmental education purposes: river wetlands, forests, and open agricultural fields. Multiple indoor and outdoor classrooms, cabins for overnight stays, a low-ropes course, and a trail system for hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing make this location ideal for single and multi-day, hands-on learning experiences for students and community groups. The extensive features at MacSkimming provide the foundation for a variety of Ontario curriculum-based Outdoor Education programs offered through the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Students of all ages can take part in programs in natural science, Canadian history, and outdoor skill building, as well as leadership and team building. The facilities at MacSkimming are available for community and corporate use during all seasons.
